We checked the internet’s favourite agency lists. Several of the agencies do not exist.
Re-verified 18 August 2026. Method below; every check is one command you can run yourself.
Why we looked
There is no neutral source for performance-creative agency selection. On 11 August we checked the two highest-intent queries a buyer would use — best performance creative agencies 2026 and best UGC ad creative agencies 2026 — and every first-page result was an agency publishing a ranking that included itself, usually at or near the top. Nine sites, no Clutch category, no G2 grid, no independent party anywhere.
That much is unsurprising. The part we did not expect is that the lists are also not maintained.
What we did
We took every agency named across those lists and fetched its own domain directly, recording the HTTP status and any redirect. Not a search result about the agency — the agency’s own site. Thirteen names went in.
What came back
Bell Curve
No longer an independent performance agency under this name. The domain serves Demand Curve, a different proposition.
Metric Digital
Absorbed into Wpromote. The referrer=md parameter is a deliberate acquisition hand-off, not a lapsed domain.
Homestead Studio
Still trading under its own name, and acquired by Verndale in March 2026. Not defunct — but a buyer reading a list from 2025 is not being told who they would actually be hiring.
Structured
Unreachable on 11 and 18 August. Not established as defunct; equally, not reachable by a buyer.
222 Agency
Its own site refuses non-browser clients. Its LinkedIn says ‘By Referral Only’ — so even reachable, it is not purchasable by someone arriving from a list.
Aisle Rocket
Unreachable on both check dates.
Sovyn
Live and substantial — and a healthcare, biotech and life-sciences PR firm. It appears in a ‘Top 9 Paid Social Media Agencies’ ranking. It has no paid-social offering.
The correction we owe
Our first pass, on 11 August, also recorded NewForm as returning 404 at its own homepage — which we noted as ironic, since the domain publishes a ranked list of the best performance-creative agencies. Re-checking on 18 August, newform.com resolves normally and serves a live site. That was a transient failure and we were wrong to read anything into it. It is corrected here rather than quietly deleted, because a piece about people not re-checking their claims cannot skip re-checking its own.
What this does and does not show
It does not show that these are bad agencies. Being acquired is not a failure, and a domain that times out on two afternoons may be fine on a third. Several firms here are genuinely good at what they do.
What it shows is narrower and, we think, more damning: nobody is checking. A buyer following those recommendations today is being sent to companies that have been absorbed into larger holdings, to sites that do not answer, and in one case to a healthcare PR firm listed among paid-social agencies. The lists have not been updated to say so, and the reason is structural rather than lazy: the lists exist to rank their own publisher, and a maintenance pass has no upside for whoever wrote them.
Run it yourself
Every check in this piece is one command. If a list recommends an agency to you, this takes ten seconds:
curl -sSLI -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code} %{url_effective}
" https://agency-domain.comA 301 or 308 to a different company means the agency you are reading about is now part of another one. A timeout means the buyer journey ends there. Neither is a verdict on the work — both are things you should know before the first call.
