Ajax Creative review
Shortlist-ready for Video Production, with the caveats below.
Toronto commercial studio with credited, current work for Porsche, IKEA, Microsoft and Cognition AI and a published 5-7 week timeline, but no published pricing, no ownership or licensing terms, and an independent review base that stops in 2022.
Pricing: from $10,000 Reported — not published by the agency
Clutch, a verification-requiring platform, shows 4.9 out of 5 from 5 verified reviews, a $10,000+ minimum project size, headcount of 2-9, and locations listed as Ottawa (HQ), Toronto and Vancouver. All five reviews are dated January 2020. source ↗
How it scored
Every dimension is scored against this discipline’s published rubric. Open one to see the claim it was scored on, what the rubric measures there and how much it weighs, and where the evidence came from.
Craft and portfolio evidenceStrong
Portfolio page carries roughly 50-60 projects attributed to demanding brands including Microsoft, TikTok, YouTube, Porsche, IKEA, Arc'teryx, Air Canada, Hellmann's, Coors Organic and International Trucks. Individual project pages are real and detailed, not thumbnails: the Cognition AI 'Devin' page lists a full crew (director Martin Marko, DP Nick Pallone, colorist Jason Zukowski at Fort York VFX, composer Sani Baladi, plus gaffer, grip, sound and 1st AC) alongside a playable file. A 9-director roster each has an individual portfolio page. Cognition's Devin product dates the work to 2024 or later, so the body of work is not stale. Capped below Excellent because no project page publishes a date, so overall recency cannot be measured, and every client attribution is self-published - no client-side confirmation was located.
What this dimension measures: The primary reason to hire a production agency. Look for a body of work that is current, attributable and recognisable, with named clients whose brands carry real standards. Distinctive, consistently high-quality output for demanding clients scores 4-5. Competent, generic output scores 3. A portfolio dominated by work more than two years old scores 2 — the team that made it has usually moved on. Where reviewers independently credit narrative or storytelling ability rather than just delivery, weight that: turning a complex proposition into something clear is the hard part of this job. Counts for 25% of the weighted score.
Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.
Scope and pricing transparencyAdequate
No price and no range is published anywhere on their own site; every services page routes to a contact form. What is published is partial commercial terms, repeated across the office pages: 'Any projects under $100k require a 50% deposit upfront with the remaining 50% upon project completion,' custom terms above $100k, a complimentary first round of changes with further changes chargeable, RAW files purchasable at extra cost including hard drive and shipping, and distribution strategy at extra cost. Clutch independently publishes a $10,000+ project minimum and DesignRush lists a $200/hr average. That is a real public anchor and an honest extras list, which lifts this off the floor, but it sits at the bottom of the band: a buyer still cannot estimate a project. Scope clarity is a weakness rather than a strength - the site states no boundaries at all and the four service pages imply the studio does everything.
What this dimension measures: Published prices, published ranges by video type, or fixed productized packages score 4-5, and an all-inclusive fee that covers script, music, narration and revisions scores at the top of that band because the quoted number is then the real number. Ranges given only on request score 2-3. Bespoke-only quoting with no public anchor scores 1-2. Score scope clarity alongside price: a vendor that states plainly what it does NOT do — no shoots, no strategy, animation only — is more useful than one implying it does everything, and should not be penalised for the boundary itself. Counts for 20% of the weighted score.
Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.
Process and project managementStrong
A four-phase process is published on the Toronto office page (Research and Development covering concept, storyboarding, scriptwriting and location scouting; Pre-Production covering scheduling, sourcing and licensing; Live-Action Production; Post-Production), and the post-production page names seven stages through to Delivery. The five verified Clutch reviews, read first-hand, corroborate execution rather than just claiming it: 'Everything that we ask them to do is done on time... They're never late,' delivery 'within one month as promised,' and 'Great communication, available nearly 24/7,' with Slack named as the collaboration channel. Two caveats keep this off Excellent: one reviewer said Ajax would benefit from 'more structure' with assigned delivery dates, and all five reviews are dated January 2020, so the corroboration describes a team six years ago.
What this dimension measures: Video projects fail on coordination far more often than on craft. Look for a described process, named collaboration tooling, defined approval gates, and independent reports of on-time delivery. Reviewers consistently citing clear communication and structured workflow score 4-5. No described process and no reviewer commentary scores 2-3. A vendor whose reviews mention schedule slippage or unresponsive periods scores 1-2 on verified evidence. Counts for 15% of the weighted score.
Evidence: verified — checked against a named source you can open; the links under Sources below are where to check it yourself.
Format and production rangeStrong
Both modalities are evidenced, not merely listed. Live action is confirmed by project pages with camera-department credits (Cognition AI, IKEA 'Sleep Talkers', International Trucks, Arc'teryx) and by a production page covering locations, crew, equipment, casting, art, SFX and stunts, and insurance and legal. Animation is confirmed by separate 2D and 3D examples (Helpwear, Trainfo, Remx, Genesis Launch). Post-production covers editorial, VFX and CGI, color, and original score, mix and voice-over. Held at Strong rather than Excellent for two reasons: nothing on the site states deliverable formats or aspect-ratio coverage for where a video will run, and Clutch lists headcount at 2-9 while the Devin credits show color going to an outside house, so the range is assembled per project rather than held in-house as the services pages imply.
What this dimension measures: What the agency can actually produce: live action, animation (2D/3D), motion graphics, studio versus location, and the format and aspect-ratio coverage needed for where the video will run. Both live action and animation, across multiple formats, scores 4-5. A single modality scores 2-3 — not a defect, but a real ceiling that the buyer must match against the brief. Animation-only vendors in particular cannot serve briefs that need people on camera, and that should be stated in the verdict rather than discovered later. Counts for 15% of the weighted score.
Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.
Rights, ownership and licensingWeak
The only published terms treat source material as the studio's to sell back: RAW files are 'available for purchase at additional cost' plus hard drive and shipping, with six months of complimentary footage storage and no stated policy after that window. That is finals-only delivery with a paid upgrade. Across the homepage, all four services pages, the production-company page and two office pages there is no statement of who owns the final file or the project files, and nothing at all on music, stock or talent licence terms, duration or territory. For commercial work carrying talent and licensed music this is the gap most likely to surface in year two, and it has to be settled in the contract before signing.
What this dimension measures: Who owns the final file, the raw footage and the project files, and for how long the music, stock and talent licences run. This is where video differs most sharply from design: a licence that expires, or talent usage limited by term and territory, can make a video unusable in year two. Explicit ownership transfer with stated licence terms scores 4-5. Finals-only delivery scores 2. Silence scores 2 and should be raised before contracting, since retrospective clearance is expensive. Counts for 10% of the weighted score.
Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.
Stronger here: Epipheo scores Strong on the same dimension.
Turnaround and schedulingStrong
A specific timeline is published and repeated consistently across office pages: 'Each project typically takes us between 5-7 weeks to produce. Depending on each client's unique needs, we can always finalize the video sooner or later.' Five to seven weeks is a realistic rather than an optimistic estimate for commissioned commercial work, which is what the rubric asks to be scored, and the production FAQ separately addresses compressed timelines. Independent Clutch reviewers report the estimate being met ('delivered within one month as promised', 'They're never late'). Short of the top band only because how far out the studio books is nowhere disclosed, so lead time to a start date is unknown.
What this dimension measures: Stated timelines from brief to delivery, and how far out the agency books. Fixed, published timelines score 4-5. Multi-month cycles are normal for high-end work and score 2-3 — score the honesty of the estimate rather than the length, since a realistic twelve weeks beats an optimistic four. Undisclosed scheduling scores 2. Counts for 10% of the weighted score.
Evidence: vendor stated — the agency’s own claim, recorded as theirs rather than ours.
References and review baseAdequate
Clutch, a verification-requiring platform, was read first-hand: 4.9 out of 5 from 5 verified reviews, minimum project size $10,000+, offices listed as Ottawa (HQ), Toronto and Vancouver. Every one of those five is dated January 2020. DesignRush, also read first-hand, reports 5.0 from 13 reviews sourced from Google Maps, the most recent quoted one dated February 2022; I did not read the Google listing directly, so those figures are reported second-hand. The ratings are uniformly high but the base is small and the entire readable footprint predates 2023, so it says little about the studio as it operates now. Low weight is appropriate here - the portfolio is the better evidence.
What this dimension measures: Volume and recency of independent, verified reviews. A substantial base on a verification-requiring platform scores 4-5; a handful of reviews scores 2-3; none located scores 2. Low weight deliberately — in this category a portfolio is more informative than a review count, and several excellent production shops have almost no review footprint because their work arrives by referral. Counts for 5% of the weighted score.
Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.
Verdict
Ajax Creative is a genuine project-based commercial video studio, not an ad-supply shop, and the craft evidence holds up to first-hand checking. The portfolio runs to roughly fifty projects for brands that carry real standards - Microsoft, TikTok, YouTube, Porsche, IKEA, Arc'teryx, Air Canada, International Trucks - and the individual project pages are substantive rather than decorative. The Cognition AI 'Devin' page lists the director, DP, colorist, composer and the full camera and grip department, which is the kind of detail a studio inventing a credit does not usually publish.
Cognition's product places that work in 2024 or later, so this is a current book. Range is unusually broad for the size: live action with casting, stunts and location work on one side, 2D and 3D animation on the other, and a post pipeline covering editorial, VFX, color, and original score and mix. A buyer commissioning a small number of considered videos a year is looking at a credible shortlist candidate.
The commercial terms are where it thins out. Nothing on the site publishes a price or a range, and the four service pages state no boundaries whatsoever, implying the studio does everything. What is published is a partial and to their credit honest set of terms, repeated across the city pages: a 50% deposit on projects under $100k with custom terms above that, a first round of changes included and further rounds chargeable, RAW files purchasable at additional cost, and distribution strategy at additional cost.
Clutch supplies the missing anchor with a $10,000+ minimum. Turnaround is the strongest of the disclosure items - a published 5 to 7 weeks, stated as typical rather than guaranteed, which is a realistic number for this work and which Clutch reviewers say was met.
The most consequential gap is rights. The only ownership-adjacent statement on the entire site is that raw footage can be bought back at extra cost and is stored free for six months. There is no statement of who owns the final file or the project files, and no terms at all on music, stock or talent licensing - no duration, no territory, no renewal position.
For commercials carrying performers and licensed music, that is the difference between an asset you can still run in year two and one you cannot, and retrospective clearance is expensive. This is a question to settle in the contract, not after.
Two further things stay unresolved. The independent review base is uniformly positive but small and old: five verified Clutch reviews all dated January 2020, and a Google-sourced count reported by DesignRush whose most recent visible entry is 2022. Nothing readable speaks to how the studio performs today, and one of those 2020 reviewers had already asked for more structure around assigned delivery dates.
Separately, the site runs a network of near-identical city landing pages - Austin, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Montreal - each written as though a local office exists, while Clutch lists three Canadian locations and a headcount of 2 to 9. A buyer in one of those US cities should confirm who is actually crewing and supervising their shoot before assuming a local team.

What we verified
Each claim below was checked against a named source, last on 2026-08-26. Follow any of them and check for yourself — that is the point of publishing them.
- Clutch, a verification-requiring platform, shows 4.9 out of 5 from 5 verified reviews, a $10,000+ minimum project size, headcount of 2-9, and locations listed as Ottawa (HQ), Toronto and Vancouver. All five reviews are dated January 2020. clutch.co ↗
- A nonsense-path control returned a genuine HTTP 404, so the site does not answer 200 to every URL and page content can be trusted to match its URL. ajaxcreative.com ↗
- Published timeline: 'Each project typically takes us between 5-7 weeks to produce. Depending on each client's unique needs, we can always finalize the video sooner or later.' ajaxcreative.com ↗
- Published payment terms: projects under $100k require a 50% deposit upfront with the balance on completion; projects over $100k get custom terms. First round of changes included, additional changes chargeable. ajaxcreative.com ↗
- RAW files are available for purchase at additional cost (including hard drive and shipping fees), with six months of complimentary footage storage. No statement anywhere of who owns the final file or the project files. ajaxcreative.com ↗
- Individual project pages carry full crew credits, not just a thumbnail. The Cognition AI 'Devin' page credits director Martin Marko, DP Nick Pallone, colorist Jason Zukowski at Fort York VFX and composer Sani Baladi, plus gaffer, grip, sound and 1st AC. ajaxcreative.com ↗
- Nine commercial directors are listed, each linking to an individual portfolio page. ajaxcreative.com ↗
- Both live action and animation are evidenced by distinct project work: live-action commercials for IKEA, International Trucks and Arc'teryx, and separate 2D and 3D animation projects (Helpwear, Trainfo, Remx, Genesis Launch). ajaxcreative.com ↗
- A four-phase process is published (Research and Development, Pre-Production, Live-Action Production, Post-Production), and post-production separately names seven stages ending in Delivery. ajaxcreative.com ↗
- The Austin office page lists a street address ('111 Congress Ave, STE 500 Austin, TX 78704') and states 'With offices in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, our video production agency has USA covered', while the Clutch profile lists only Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. ajaxcreative.com ↗
- No pricing, budget range, rights or licensing information appears on the homepage or on any of the four service pages (creative, production, post-production, animation); all route to a contact form promising a reply within 24 hours. ajaxcreative.com ↗
What other platforms say
Uniformly positive but thin and dated. The five verified Clutch reviews, read first-hand and all dated January 2020, credit on-time delivery ('They're never late'), responsiveness ('available nearly 24/7'), Slack-based collaboration and willingness to absorb changes; the one substantive criticism was a request for more structure around assigned delivery dates. DesignRush reports 5.0 from 13 reviews it states are sourced from Google Maps, with the most recent quoted review dated February 2022 - that listing was not read directly on Google, so those figures are second-hand. No readable independent review of the studio's work after 2022 was located.
These are other platforms' numbers, not ours. We report them because they are part of the picture, and we do not average them into our score — our score comes from the published rubric above.
Red flags
- The site runs a network of near-identical city landing pages (Austin, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Montreal) each written as an 'Austin video production company' and similar, with the Austin page listing a specific street address and asserting 'offices in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York'. The Clutch profile lists only Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, with a headcount of 2-9. The implied US physical footprint is not corroborated by the independent profile.
- Raw footage is treated as a chargeable buy-back rather than a deliverable, and is only guaranteed to be retained for six months, while no ownership or licensing terms are published anywhere on the site.
What we could not verify
- What does a video actually cost? No price or range is published for any video type; the only anchors are a $100k payment-terms threshold on their own site and a $10,000+ minimum on Clutch.
- Who owns the finished video and the project files, and is ownership transferred outright or licensed?
- What are the music, stock and talent licence terms - duration, territory, renewal cost? Nothing on the site addresses this, and it determines whether a commercial can still run in year two.
- What happens to footage after the six-month complimentary storage window ends, and what does buying RAW files actually cost?
- What is a second or third round of revisions charged at? Only the first round is included and the rate for further rounds is not stated.
- How far in advance does the studio book? The 5-7 week production estimate says nothing about lead time to a start date.
- Is there any independent review of work delivered after 2022? The entire readable review base predates that.
- In the US cities with dedicated landing pages, who crews and supervises the shoot - a local team or travelling Canadian staff?
- What deliverable formats, resolutions and aspect ratios are included as standard?
