Claneo review

Conditional for SEO

Worth a conversation about SEO once the caveats below are settled.

A Berlin SEO and GEO agency of about 80 people with real international SEO, content and AI-search depth, a third-party award for a financial-services client, and a 4.9 review base - but every published result is traffic and rankings, not leads or revenue, and nothing on the site says what it costs or whether link placements are paid.

Pricing: several published tiers Reported — not published by the agency
Clutch lists Claneo's service mix as SEO 50%, content writing 15%, PR 15%, content marketing 10%, conversion optimisation 5%, generative AI 5%, with a $5,000+ minimum project and $100-$149 per hour. source ↗

How it scored

Every dimension is scored against this discipline’s published rubric. Open one to see the claim it was scored on, what the rubric measures there and how much it weighs, and where the evidence came from.

How we scored this

We read the agency’s public record first-hand — its site, pricing, case studies and independent reviews — and score what is checkable: what is published, not how it is phrased. There is no keyword counting or sentiment scoring. The label is a judgment on those facts, which is why each dimension shows the fact that decided it, the band it was judged against, and the sources — so you can check the call, and tell us if you think it is wrong. The full method, and who pays, is on how we vet.

Vertical and stage fitStrong

Strong — 4 of 5 on this rubric’s scale, from Poor (1) to Excellent (5). This dimension carries 20% of the total score.

Benchmark — across the 32 other agencies evaluated in this discipline, this dimension runs Excellent 17 · Strong 6 · Adequate 4 · Weak 5. The typical agency here scores Excellent, and 17 of them score higher than this one.

What this dimension measures: Named clients in the buyer's vertical and stage (B2B SaaS, ecommerce, local, etc.).

Scores low — Direct sector+stage match scores 5; 'we do SEO for everyone' scores 2. Long-sales-cycle B2B SEO is a different craft from ecommerce or local, mismatch scores 1-2.

What we found — Large DACH and multinational brands: named case studies for Henkel, Bosch, HelloFresh, MediaMarktSaturn, Doctolib, Lieferando. Clutch independently lists a $5,000+ minimum and $100-$149/hr, which fits mid-market and enterprise rather than small businesses. Finance and insurance experience is real but thin on the site: one insurer testimonial (ROLAND Rechtsschutz) and one third-party award for a building society, with no financial case study.

On the record — “The insurance-and-finance industry page links to case studies for Henkel, SOLARWATT and Jungheinrich; none of the 18 published case studies is a financial-services or insurance client.” claneo.com ↗

On the record — “Clutch lists Claneo's service mix as SEO 50%, content writing 15%, PR 15%, content marketing 10%, conversion optimisation 5%, generative AI 5%, with a $5,000+ minimum project and $100-$149 per hour.” clutch.co ↗

B2B — business-to-business: selling to companies rather than consumers — longer deals, more decision-makers.

SaaS — software as a service: subscription software; as a client type it brings recurring revenue and metrics like churn and lifetime value.

Evidence: verified — checked against a named source you can open; the links under Sources below are where to check it yourself.

Technical SEO depthStrong

Strong — 4 of 5 on this rubric’s scale, from Poor (1) to Excellent (5). This dimension carries 15% of the total score.

Benchmark — across the 32 other agencies evaluated in this discipline, this dimension runs Excellent 13 · Strong 4 · Adequate 9 · Weak 6. The typical agency here scores Strong, and 13 of them score higher than this one.

What this dimension measures: Real technical capability: crawlability, site architecture, Core Web Vitals, indexation, schema, migrations, JS rendering.

Scores high — Named technical audits and fixes with outcomes score 4-5.

Scores low — 'We'll optimize your meta tags' with no technical substance scores 1-2.

What we found — International SEO across 10+ languages, relaunch and migration support with named testimonials (AnyDesk's move from multi-domain to one multilingual platform, Tennis-Point's shop migration), technical audits, and server log-file analysis for AI crawlers. The Henkel case describes a six-country technical audit. The method is described, not published as a sample. That is the high band above, which is why it scored Strong.

Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.

Content quality and topical authorityStrong

Strong — 4 of 5 on this rubric’s scale, from Poor (1) to Excellent (5). This dimension carries 18% of the total score.

Benchmark — across the 32 other agencies evaluated in this discipline, this dimension runs Excellent 7 · Strong 15 · Adequate 4 · Weak 6. The typical agency here scores Strong, and 7 of them score higher than this one.

What this dimension measures: Genuinely researched, expert or expert-reviewed content that builds topical authority, not thin AI-generated churn.

Scores high — Named writers/SMEs, editorial process, and content that ranks and converts score 4-5.

Scores low — High-volume, low-differentiation AI content 'at scale' scores 1-2 (Google's helpful-content and AI-slop filters punish it).

What we found — The Henkel case reports more than 730 new category, product and guide texts across eight brand sites; the SOLARWATT case built the solarenergie.de advice portal, which is public and can be read. Claneo publishes its own research (State of Search study) and a GEO book. Traffic figures attached to these are vendor-stated. That is the high band above, which is why it scored Strong.

On the record — “The Henkel case reports +278% total traffic and +290% organic traffic from 2018 to 2021 across six countries, and states the visibility gain came from working with Claneo and another content agency.” claneo.com ↗

churn — the rate at which customers cancel.

Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.

Link building integrityAdequate

Adequate — 3 of 5 on this rubric’s scale, from Poor (1) to Excellent (5). This dimension carries 12% of the total score.

Benchmark — across the 32 other agencies evaluated in this discipline, this dimension runs Excellent 5 · Strong 13 · Adequate 11 · Weak 3. The typical agency here scores Strong, and 18 of them score higher than this one.

Scores high — Earned links via digital PR, original data, and genuine outreach score 4-5.

Scores low — PBNs, link networks, mass guest-post buying, or 'we'll build 50 links/month' packages score 1-2 (penalty risk). Silence on how links are earned scores 2.

What we found — Two models are sold side by side: earned digital PR, with a dozen named campaign case studies, and 'traditional link marketing' through a managed publisher portfolio in Claneo's own tool, which also handles link invoicing for clients. The site does not say whether publishers are paid for placements. Claneo states it has signed the BVDW codes of conduct for SEO and content marketing. That is between the two bands, which is why it scored Adequate.

On the record — “The off-page page sells 'traditional link marketing' through a publisher portfolio managed in Claneo's own tool, COBRA, which also delivers link invoices to clients; it does not say whether placements are paid.” claneo.com ↗

Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.

AEO / GEO for AI searchStrong

Strong — 4 of 5 on this rubric’s scale, from Poor (1) to Excellent (5). This dimension carries 15% of the total score.

Benchmark — across the 32 other agencies evaluated in this discipline, this dimension runs Excellent 7 · Strong 11 · Adequate 5 · Weak 6 · Poor 3. The typical agency here scores Strong, and 7 of them score higher than this one.

What this dimension measures: The 2026 differentiator. Does the agency have a real practice for getting the client cited in AI answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Reddit visibility)? Buzzword-only with no substance scores 3.

Scores high — Named methodology and examples score 4-5.

Scores low — No mention of AI search / answer-engine optimization scores 2 (behind the curve).

What we found — A dedicated GEO/LLMO service covering AI-visibility monitoring, content readiness, schema and rendering, and log-file analysis of AI bots. Corroborated outside the site: an OMR Reviews listing in the GEO agencies category, and an OMR Festival 2026 masterclass on GEO that Claneo says won the audience award. No GEO case study with before-and-after numbers is published. That is the high band above, which is why it scored Strong.

On the record — “The GEO page offers AI-visibility monitoring, content readiness analysis, and server log-file analysis of how AI bots crawl a site.” claneo.com ↗

On the record — “OMR Reviews shows Claneo at 4.9 from 7 on-platform reviews and lists it in the GEO, SEO and PR agency categories.” omr.com ↗

Measurement tied to pipeline, not just rankingsWeak

Weak — 2 of 5 on this rubric’s scale, from Poor (1) to Excellent (5). This dimension carries 15% of the total score.

Benchmark — across the 32 other agencies evaluated in this discipline, this dimension runs Excellent 8 · Strong 9 · Adequate 7 · Weak 8. The typical agency here scores Strong, and 24 of them score higher than this one.

What this dimension measures: Ties SEO to pipeline/revenue (organic-sourced pipeline, conversions, assisted revenue) rather than keyword-ranking screenshots.

Scores high — Pipeline/revenue reporting scores 4-5.

Scores low — Rankings-and-traffic-only reporting scores 1-2, especially given AI Overviews are cutting clicks even when rankings hold.

What we found — Every published result is a traffic or ranking measure: Henkel +278% total and +290% organic traffic, top-3 and top-10 ranking counts, featured-snippet coverage; SOLARWATT 2.7M portal visitors and over EUR 2M in ad-equivalent 'traffic value'. No case reports leads, applications, policies or revenue. Weekly reporting is described, but on those same KPIs. That is what the low band describes, which is why it scored Weak.

On the record — “The Henkel case reports +278% total traffic and +290% organic traffic from 2018 to 2021 across six countries, and states the visibility gain came from working with Claneo and another content agency.” claneo.com ↗

pipeline — the dollar value of open, qualified deals sales is working. “Pipeline created” ties marketing to money, where lead counts don’t.

Evidence: verified — checked against a named source you can open; the links under Sources below are where to check it yourself.

Stronger here: Seer Interactive scores Excellent on the same dimension.

Contract and pricing transparencyWeak

Weak — 2 of 5 on this rubric’s scale, from Poor (1) to Excellent (5). This dimension carries 5% of the total score.

Benchmark — across the 32 other agencies evaluated in this discipline, this dimension runs Excellent 3 · Strong 6 · Adequate 10 · Weak 11 · Poor 2. The typical agency here scores Adequate, and 19 of them score higher than this one.

What this dimension measures: SEO takes months to show, so a fair exit clause matters more here.

Scores high — Month-to-month or short terms with a published pricing anchor score 4-5.

Scores low — 12-month lock-ins score 2. Bespoke-only quoting with no anchor scores 1-2.

What we found — No prices, retainer range, minimum or contract term on the site. Clutch lists $5,000+ minimum and $100-$149/hr, which is third-party but not a published offer. That is what the low band describes, which is why it scored Weak.

On the record — “Clutch lists Claneo's service mix as SEO 50%, content writing 15%, PR 15%, content marketing 10%, conversion optimisation 5%, generative AI 5%, with a $5,000+ minimum project and $100-$149 per hour.” clutch.co ↗

retainer — a fixed monthly fee regardless of hours or output — predictable, but worth tying to a defined scope.

Evidence: verified — checked against a named source you can open; the links under Sources below are where to check it yourself.

Stronger here: InsuranceSplash scores Excellent on the same dimension.

Verdict

Claneo is a Berlin agency founded in 2017 by three people who previously helped build another large European search agency. It sells SEO, international SEO, content, digital PR and GEO (optimisation for AI answer engines), and Clutch's own breakdown puts SEO at half the business, with content writing, PR and content marketing making up most of the rest. The site is bilingual; a nonsense-path control returned a real 404, so the pages read here are the pages asked for.

The strengths are checkable. Fit is clearest for large DACH and multinational brands: named case studies cover Henkel, Bosch, HelloFresh, MediaMarktSaturn, Doctolib and Lieferando, and named testimonials include AnyDesk, Hella and Highsnobiety.

International work is the specialty - more than 10 languages in-house, and the Henkel case describes a technical audit and SEO programme across six countries. AI-search work is a real service line rather than a paragraph: a dedicated GEO page that includes log-file analysis of AI crawlers, a German-language book on GEO, a GEO conference it runs, and an OMR Festival 2026 masterclass on GEO that attendees voted an audience award.

For insurance and finance buyers specifically: the site has a dedicated insurance-and-finance page, a named testimonial from ROLAND Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-AG (a legal-expenses insurer), and a 2025 BVDW Search Award for Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall that trade press confirms. But the case studies that page links to are Henkel, SOLARWATT and Jungheinrich - none of them financial - and none of the 18 published case studies is a bank or insurer.

Three things hold the score down. Measurement stops at traffic: the Henkel case reports +290% organic traffic and ranking distributions, SOLARWATT reports visitors and 'traffic value' in ad-equivalent euros, and no case reports leads, policies, applications or revenue. The Henkel case also says the visibility recovery came from Claneo 'and another content agency', which is honest and means the result is shared.

Link building is described as 'traditional link marketing' through a managed publisher portfolio in an in-house tool that also handles invoicing, alongside earned digital PR; the site never says whether publishers are paid for placements. And there is no pricing, minimum or contract term anywhere on the site - Clutch lists a $5,000+ minimum and $100-$149 an hour.

Independent reviews are strong and fairly thin: Clutch 4.9 across 4-5 verified reviews (April 2024 to February 2026), OMR Reviews 4.9 from 7 on-platform reviews. The lowest Clutch review (4.5) reports an organic traffic gain of about 7-8% and asks Claneo to be 'less SEO-centered'.

What we verified

Each claim below was checked against a named source, last on 2026-10-17. Follow any of them and check for yourself — that is the point of publishing them.

What other platforms say

Clutch 4.9/5; header shows 5 reviews, 4 verified, April 2024 to February 2026 · Omr_Reviews 4.9/5 from 7 on-platform reviews (OMR also shows 4.9 from 96 including external sources)

Consistently positive and small on the platforms that verify reviewers. The lowest Clutch review (4.5) reports a modest organic traffic gain of about 7-8% and suggests Claneo be less SEO-centred; another asks for better documentation of the SEO strategy. OMR's larger 96-review figure mixes in external sources and is not counted as independent here.

These are other platforms' numbers, not ours. We report them because they are part of the picture, and we do not average them into our score — our score comes from the published rubric above.
