Richter Studios review
Shortlist-ready for Video Production, with the caveats below.
A 25+ year Chicago-area production studio with published price ranges ($10K-$100K by type), realistic published timelines, and a broad live-action-plus-animation portfolio for recognisable brands — but undated work, silence on rights and licensing, and almost no readable independent review base.
Pricing: several published tiers Published by the agency
Published price ranges by production type on own service pages: videos from $10K, custom filming from ~$20K, brand films/commercials $50K-$100K source ↗
How it scored
Every dimension is scored against this discipline’s published rubric. Open one to see the claim it was scored on, what the rubric measures there and how much it weighs, and where the evidence came from.
Craft and portfolio evidenceStrong
Large attributable portfolio with embedded, viewable videos (Wistia players confirmed on project pages) for recognisable clients: Deloitte, Wilson, Radio Flyer, Life Fitness, TransUnion, Infiniti, McCain Foods, Elkay, International Trucks. Claims 100+ international awards incl. Cannes and German Design Award (vendor-stated, not independently verified). Held back from Excellent because project pages carry no dates, and several showcased clients (Fast Radius, Sears, Kmart, Bayliner) suggest a meaningful share of the work may be well over two years old — currency cannot be established.
What this dimension measures: The primary reason to hire a production agency. Look for a body of work that is current, attributable and recognisable, with named clients whose brands carry real standards. Distinctive, consistently high-quality output for demanding clients scores 4-5. Competent, generic output scores 3. A portfolio dominated by work more than two years old scores 2 — the team that made it has usually moved on. Where reviewers independently credit narrative or storytelling ability rather than just delivery, weight that: turning a complex proposition into something clear is the hard part of this job. Counts for 25% of the weighted score.
Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.
Scope and pricing transparencyStrong
Published price anchors by production type on their own service pages: videos from $10K (animation from $10K with client script, ~$20K if Richter scripts/storyboards/casts VO); custom-filmed profile/recruitment/launch videos from ~$20K; brand films and commercials $50K-$100K. Engagement terms stated: proposal then 50% upfront on signing; most projects include two revision rounds. Not fixed all-inclusive packages, so not top of band.
What this dimension measures: Published prices, published ranges by video type, or fixed productized packages score 4-5, and an all-inclusive fee that covers script, music, narration and revisions scores at the top of that band because the quoted number is then the real number. Ranges given only on request score 2-3. Bespoke-only quoting with no public anchor scores 1-2. Score scope clarity alongside price: a vendor that states plainly what it does NOT do — no shoots, no strategy, animation only — is more useful than one implying it does everything, and should not be penalised for the boundary itself. Counts for 20% of the weighted score.
Evidence: vendor stated — the agency’s own claim, recorded as theirs rather than ours.
Process and project managementAdequate
A described process exists: pre-production (strategy, script, storyboards, casting), production, post-production, multiple approval gates, stated transparency on talent/location/music/stock sourcing, and a project debrief. They recommend script/storyboard approval before animation to avoid costly revisions. No named collaboration tooling, and no independent client reviews were readable to corroborate on-time delivery or communication, so this stays vendor-stated at Adequate.
What this dimension measures: Video projects fail on coordination far more often than on craft. Look for a described process, named collaboration tooling, defined approval gates, and independent reports of on-time delivery. Reviewers consistently citing clear communication and structured workflow score 4-5. No described process and no reviewer commentary scores 2-3. A vendor whose reviews mention schedule slippage or unresponsive periods scores 1-2 on verified evidence. Counts for 15% of the weighted score.
Evidence: vendor stated — the agency’s own claim, recorded as theirs rather than ours.
Format and production rangeExcellent
Both live action and animation, demonstrated across the portfolio: live action (commercials, corporate, documentary, testimonial, aerial cinematography, live streaming, up to 8K), animation (2D, 3D, character, motion graphics, photo animation, live-action compositing), plus stills photography. Own facility claimed: 10,000 sq ft with four production stages and three edit suites in Highland Park, IL (vendor-stated). Among the widest ranges in the category.
What this dimension measures: What the agency can actually produce: live action, animation (2D/3D), motion graphics, studio versus location, and the format and aspect-ratio coverage needed for where the video will run. Both live action and animation, across multiple formats, scores 4-5. A single modality scores 2-3 — not a defect, but a real ceiling that the buyer must match against the brief. Animation-only vendors in particular cannot serve briefs that need people on camera, and that should be stated in the verdict rather than discovered later. Counts for 15% of the weighted score.
Evidence: partly checkable — corroborated in part against the sources below; the remainder rests on the agency’s own account.
Rights, ownership and licensingWeak
Nothing published anywhere read — service pages, project pages, and the Terms of Use (which covers only the website's own IP) — about who owns finals, raw footage or project files, or how long music, stock and talent licences run. The site does state transparency about music/stock 'sourcing' in-process, but no ownership or licence-term commitments. Must be raised before contracting.
What this dimension measures: Who owns the final file, the raw footage and the project files, and for how long the music, stock and talent licences run. This is where video differs most sharply from design: a licence that expires, or talent usage limited by term and territory, can make a video unusable in year two. Explicit ownership transfer with stated licence terms scores 4-5. Finals-only delivery scores 2. Silence scores 2 and should be raised before contracting, since retrospective clearance is expensive. Counts for 10% of the weighted score.
Evidence: inferred — our reading of indirect evidence, not a documented fact.
Stronger here: Epipheo scores Strong on the same dimension.
Turnaround and schedulingStrong
Published, realistic timelines by type: 3 weeks minimum, 4-6 weeks typical for B2B corporate video with interviews and B-roll, 8-12 weeks for brand films and commercials; simple animation 3-4 weeks, complex animation 6-8 weeks. The estimates are honest about the marketing '3 weeks' headline being a floor, not the norm. Booking lead time (how far out they book) is not disclosed.
What this dimension measures: Stated timelines from brief to delivery, and how far out the agency books. Fixed, published timelines score 4-5. Multi-month cycles are normal for high-end work and score 2-3 — score the honesty of the estimate rather than the length, since a realistic twelve weeks beats an optimistic four. Undisclosed scheduling scores 2. Counts for 10% of the weighted score.
Evidence: vendor stated — the agency’s own claim, recorded as theirs rather than ours.
References and review baseWeak
Clutch profile read first-hand: 0 reviews. Yelp shows a single 5-star review from 2016 (read via Yahoo Local; Yelp itself bot-blocked). A search snippet claims a 5.0 Google rating on 38 reviews, but the Google review page could not be read first-hand, so that number is not citable. BBB rating A+ but not accredited and no customer reviews shown. Effectively no readable independent client review base — consistent with a referral-driven shop, but unverifiable.
What this dimension measures: Volume and recency of independent, verified reviews. A substantial base on a verification-requiring platform scores 4-5; a handful of reviews scores 2-3; none located scores 2. Low weight deliberately — in this category a portfolio is more informative than a review count, and several excellent production shops have almost no review footprint because their work arrives by referral. Counts for 5% of the weighted score.
Evidence: verified — checked against a named source you can open; the links under Sources below are where to check it yourself.
Stronger here: Vidico scores Excellent on the same dimension.
Verdict
Richter Studios is a Highland Park (Chicago North Shore) production company operating since 1997, offering live action, animation and photography from its own claimed 10,000 sq ft facility with four stages. The portfolio is genuinely attributable — project pages embed viewable videos for named clients including Deloitte, Wilson, Radio Flyer, Life Fitness, TransUnion and International Trucks — and the range is unusually wide for the category, covering commercials, corporate video, documentary, aerial, 2D/3D animation, motion graphics and hybrid pieces. The main caveat on craft is currency: no project is dated, and the roster includes defunct or long-past clients (Fast Radius, Sears, Kmart), so a buyer cannot tell how much of the showcased work the current team actually made recently.
Transparency is a real strength. The site publishes price anchors by production type — videos from $10K, custom-filmed pieces from about $20K, brand films and commercials $50K-$100K, animation from $10K with a client-supplied script — and publishes timelines that are honest about their own floor: 3 weeks is possible, 4-6 weeks is typical for interview-driven corporate work, 8-12 weeks for brand films.
Engagement mechanics are stated plainly: preliminary call, proposal with costs, 50% upfront on signing, two revision rounds on most projects, script and storyboard approval gates before animation. All of this is self-published rather than corroborated, but it gives a buyer a real number and a real schedule to plan against.
The two holes are rights and references. Nothing read — including the Terms of Use, which covers only the website — says who owns the finished files, raw footage or project files, or how long music, stock and talent licences run; that must be settled in contract before shooting. And the independent review base is close to nonexistent: the Clutch profile has zero reviews, Yelp shows one review from 2016, and a claimed 5.0 Google rating on 38 reviews could not be read first-hand, so it cannot be relied on here.
The 100+ international awards, Cannes wins and '14,500 films' figures are likewise vendor-stated. A referral-driven shop with this profile can be excellent, but a buyer should ask directly for two or three recent, dated references, delivery-date performance on those projects, and the studio's standard position on footage ownership and licence terms.

What other platforms say
No usable independent review base was readable. Clutch: zero reviews (read first-hand). Yelp: one 5-star review from 2016 praising creativity and ease of collaboration (read via Yahoo Local; Yelp itself bot-blocked). A search snippet claims 5.0 on 38 Google reviews but the Google page could not be read first-hand, so those numbers are not cited. BBB shows an A+ rating, not accredited, no customer reviews.
These are other platforms' numbers, not ours. We report them because they are part of the picture, and we do not average them into our score — our score comes from the published rubric above.
What we could not verify
- Who owns the final video, raw footage and project files, and how long music, stock and talent licences run
- How recent the showcased portfolio work is — project pages carry no dates, and some featured clients are defunct or historical (Fast Radius, Sears, Kmart)
- What independent clients actually say — the claimed 5.0/38 Google review base could not be read first-hand
- How far out the studio books and its actual on-time delivery record
- Whether the 100+ international awards and Cannes wins can be independently confirmed
- Why BBB lists the business as started in 2003 while the site says founded 1997
