Agencies selling AI-built marketing systems. Scored on whether there is engineering underneath or AI branding over ordinary marketing work.
24 evaluated, of which we would put 23 in front of a client and cut 1.
The anti-slop razor: can they build, or only advise?
This is the category with the widest gap between claim and capability, so the rubric asks one question above the rest — is there engineering underneath, or is ‘AI’ branding applied to ordinary marketing services? Ask to see something running: an agent, a pipeline, a monitored system, code. A deck about AI transformation is not evidence of having built anything.
Ask what stack, specifically
Real practitioners here are fluent in a named stack — CRM and data plumbing, automation tooling, LLM and agent frameworks, and enough Python to hold it together. Vagueness about tools is the reliable tell, because anyone who has actually shipped has strong opinions about what broke.
Tie it to something countable
The work should resolve to pipeline created, hours removed, or throughput gained. AI projects are unusually prone to producing impressive demos with no measurable effect on the business, and this is the category where that failure is most expensive because the buyer often cannot evaluate the technical claims independently.
A large, highly reviewed performance agency that uses AI within SEO and PPC, but public evidence does not show the custom agent, workflow, and integration engineering required for this category.
AI is secondary to a broad agency offer
Insufficient proof of production agent and workflow implementation
Category mismatch
How this page is built: every vendor here is scored against the published ai_marketing rubric — the one written for what this category actually sells, not a general agency rubric. Several of these records were first filed elsewhere and scored against a rubric they were not competing in; where that happened, the record carries a rescored_from field showing the previous verdict and score, so the change is auditable rather than silent.
