This is the rare category where you can inspect the product
If a firm wrote a client's homepage, that homepage is online and you can go read it. Ask for named clients and live URLs, not screenshots — a screenshot cannot be checked and may be spec work that never shipped. A portfolio that shows only results and no actual writing is withholding the one thing this category can always show.
Ask where the message came from
The difference between expensive copy and effective copy is usually research: customer interviews, review mining, sales-call analysis, or message testing with real respondents. Without any of that you are buying the writer's intuition. Sometimes that is worth buying — but you should know that is what it is.
Treat conversion-lift claims as marketing until proven otherwise
‘Increased conversions 312%’ with no baseline, timeframe or named client is not a measurement. An uncontrolled before-and-after on a page whose traffic mix also changed tells you almost nothing. The firms worth trusting state the test conditions, or make no numeric claim at all.
Positioning and copywriting are different purchases
Some firms here rewrite pages; others reposition the company and the pages follow. The second is strategy work with a different price and a different buyer, and hiring one when you needed the other is the most common mismatch in this category. Our records say which each firm is.
Establish who implements
A document handed over is not a live page. Find out whether the firm builds in your CMS or hands you copy to deploy, because that decides who carries the last mile — and it is where otherwise good copy goes to sit unpublished.
How this page is built: every vendor here is scored against the published conversion_copywriting rubric — the one written for what this category actually sells, not a general agency rubric. Several of these records were first filed elsewhere and scored against a rubric they were not competing in; where that happened, the record carries a rescored_from field showing the previous verdict and score, so the change is auditable rather than silent.
